WMEP is a proud sponsor of the 2019 Manufacturing First Conference

WMEP will be presenting a breakout session entitled “Getting Started in Automation – Strategies to Evaluate, Prioritize and Implement Automation Projects” on October 30th from 1:00 – 2:00pm.

As manufacturers struggle with tight labor pools, they are increasingly evaluating automation as a potential solution to increase throughput. Understanding how to rank projects by risk factors is critical to pursuing projects that have a positive business case.

Key takeaways include:
• Why Automation: How Automation can help your growth strategy
• Automation Fits: Cases where Automation makes sense
• Automation Primer: Steps to prepare a culture for Automation
• How to Assess Projects: Risk factors for ranking Automation
• Automation Project Planning: Critical steps for successful implementation
• Long Term Support: Equipment Technical & Cybersecurity considerations

Speaker: Colin Wilson is a senior consultant with the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership with a focus on automation.
Wilson has more than a decade of experience in industrial automation. His roles have included component selection and sizing, field service, applications development for custom equipment, and technical system sales for a component manufacturer.

He has worked with small manufacturers just starting down the automation path through multinational corporations seeking to optimize their value streams.
Wilson is passionate about assisting Wisconsin’s small and mid-size manufacturers in establishing their automation path with a focus on driving productivity, improving quality and addressing labor shortages.

Prior to joining the WMEP, Wilson served as a sales engineer for Lenze Americas Corporation, which specializes in developing motion control solutions. Wilson also worked as a sales and application engineer for Isthmus Engineering & Manufacturing, a full-service engineering firm located in Madison.
A resident of Belleville, Wisconsin, Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.

With Northeast Wisconsin an epicenter of manufacturing, Manufacturing First has rapidly become known as one of the state’s premier industry events. Since it began in 2011, Manufacturing First routinely welcomes more than 1,200 attendants and 550+ high school students annually to the KI Center in Green Bay. With the NEW Manufacturing Alliance and First Business Bank, Insight Publications is a co-sponsor and coordinator of the event.

Manufacturing First features a full-day of speakers, informative presentations focused on innovation and the latest industry trends, multiple networking opportunities and an expo hall with more than 200 exhibitors highlighting their products and services. The students attending the event have an opportunity to meet with manufacturers and learn about possible career options.

The evening prior to Manufacturing First, the NEW Manufacturing Alliance holds its Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnership Awards dinner honoring innovation at local companies and educators who are making a difference. Students pursuing careers in manufacturing also receive scholarships at the dinner.
