COMPANY PROFILE:

Founded in 1945, Wiscon Products is a third generation, family-owned machine shop, that provides advanced CNC lathe precision turned parts from bar stock. The company’s expertise is in highly complex, high-volume CNC precision machined parts for the hydraulic, aerospace, automotive, and construction industries. Wiscon Products operates a manufacturing facility in Racine, Wisconsin.

SITUATION:

Wiscon Products’ executive leadership wanted to convert from their existing quality certification (ISO 9001:2015) to the automotive standard (IATF 16949:2016) at the behest of its existing automotive customers while attracting additional customers from the industries that place a premium on this designation. Wiscon Products deemed this shift as a priority not only as a means of meeting customer expectations, but also as an opportunity to continue to align business processes, reduce quality costs, and standardize operational processes. IATF 16949:2016 is a supplement that utilizes the ISO 9001:2015 framework, which allowed for integration into the company’s existing framework.

SOLUTIONS:

A WMEP Manufacturing Solutions Advisor provided guidance and materials for Wiscon to modify and enhance its existing quality management system (QMS) to transition to a QMS based on the automotive framework requirements. The materials used included documentation templates and the use of an “action tracker” process for assigning and driving actions to completion. The guidance was provided exclusively through remote assistance. Wiscon’s management representative and team members drove the changes internally.

RESULTS:

  • The company achieved the automotive (IATF 16949:2016) certification and received its certificate in July 2021. It directly notified customers of the certification and posted it on the company’s website.
  • Leverages certification for additional business opportunities.

TESTIMONIAL:

“The transition from quality certification to automotive certification was an extensive and complex process with many opportunities for gaps and shortfalls. Working in tandem with WMEP allowed for proven approaches to be reviewed with efficient and effective adaptations made to fit the business needs of Wiscon Products as well as the standard. Having an experienced team to compare and contrast ideas, plans and interpretations resulted in a strong Quality Management System and successful certification to the automotive standard.”

Richard Bachman, quality manager – Wiscon Products Inc.
