Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership

PSIThe Wisconsin Profitable Sustainability Initiative is an innovative, three-step approach that helps small and midsize manufacturers focus on improvements in the entire operation that will result in the greatest ROI and a positive environmental impact.

Established in February 2010, and funded by a state grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), formerly the Department of Commerce, and a federal grant from the State Energy Office awarded by the Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the program successfully establishes Wisconsin as a leader in sustainable manufacturing—a state where a high percentage of manufacturers employ sustainable practices and/or manufacture sustainable products.

Three-step process to savings and sustainability

The PSI approach brings together a team of expert partners to work with manufacturers to identify and implement high-payback projects targeting energy, logistics, product and process innovation and environmental improvements.

The PSI process is a defined progression to profitable, sustainable improvement:

  1. Diagnostic (30 days): discovers and prioritizes the manufacturer's primary opportunities for profitable, sustainable improvement.
  2. Assessment (60 days): a drill down into the opportunities revealed by the diagnostic to identify current conditions and costs and determine the feasibility of specific improvement opportunities.  The output of the assessment process is a rigorous cost/benefit analysis used to prioritize improvements based on sustainable impact, payback period and ROI.
  3. Implementation (6-24 months): the PSI implementation plan uses findings from the assessment phase to drive business execution.  Projects range from replacing low-efficiency light fixtures to re-designing manufacturing processes in order to optimize energy use, reduce raw material use and scrap production to replacing old machinery with modern, efficient models. Optimizing freight routes and shipping schedules is another major source of savings and a way to reduce enviromental impact.
