Published May 23, 2011 - Manufacturing WeeklyThe Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP) and the state Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Export Management are helping small- to medium-sized manufacturers in the state expand their export sales through Expor Tech.The program helps companies identify markets on the global scale that they might be able to sell their products to and assists them with connecting to those customers, said Roxanne Baumann, director of partnerships and alliances with WMEP.

Up to 20 manufacturers in Milwaukee will receive money and planning support for projects to improve efficiency and sustainability under a new program city officials announced Thursday.The program, dubbed Milwaukee E3, has the city joining with 10 public and private organizations to make manufacturers with between 20 and 500 employees more competitive. Michael Klonsinski,
executive director and CEO of the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension
Partnership, has accepted an appointment as deputy secretary of the
Wisconsin Department of Commerce.
Klonsinski has spent the past 12 years with WMEP, a Madison-based
nonprofit consulting organization that assists small and midsize
manufacturers in becoming more competitive and efficient.

A growing number of Wisconsin manufacturers are using sustainability to reduce costs – and grow profits.In the area of logistics, 11 manufacturers identified $1.8 million in recurring annual savings.“Every manufacturer has the potential to achieve immediate and recurring savings by using resources more efficiently and effectively,” said Randy Bertram of WMEP, speaking to a group of more than 20 Madison-area manufacturers at a recent Profitable Sustainability forum. “If this isn’t on your radar right now, it should be.”

Senate action provides funding for Manufacturing Extension Partnership
The U.S. Senate passed the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of
2010 last week, which included provisions that authorized the funding
of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). The funding was
requested by Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl.

When the economy is booming, businesses aren't as concerned about saving money.
But when the economy starts tanking, business picks up at Harvard Corp. in Evansville.
Tucked off Highway 14 north of Evansville, the small international
company makes filters and filtration systems. It is on track to increase
sales 15 percent this year.
"It's because of the fact that people are looking for ways to reduce
costs, and we have a reputation of helping people reduce their
operational costs," President Otto Knottnerus said.

In addition, the site provides information on WMEP's expanded line of Next Generation Manufacturing consulting services.
